Lesson Objective
To explain our maths learning
Steps to Success
1. Explain the Maths and Steps to Success
2. Every group member takes part in explaining the Maths in each question
3. Include drama and props
4. Plan
5. Work as a group
Notes
Starter (10 mins)
-
Check self assessment (PP65M.12.1-Slide 2)
Introduce problems and discuss strategies (PP65M.12.1-Slide 3).
Talk Time (Pairs organised by ability)
Partners work together to solve problems. If finished, learn times table. LA concentrate on number bonds, times tables, targets or work with support in a pair or support from teacher.
Go through workings and answers.
Main (20 mins)
Review the ‘What do we know about?’ slide concentrating on the topics to cover today (PP65M.12.1-Slide 4). Look at the questions to concentrate on today (PP65M.11.1-Slides 5-6).
Discuss any problems in group work and again stress that we need to explain the maths that is used to answer each question, being clear in the steps to success needed in each case. Give example of the use of pictures and actions. Evaluate learners’ equal participation in explaining the maths used in each question. (PP65M.12.1-Slides 7-9)
Review prior learning for today’s questions looking at the calculations and steps to success for each question. (PP65M.12.1-Slides 10-17, Slides 21-39, Slides 43-49)
Talk Time (Mixed Ability Groups)
Groups discuss how they would integrate our learning into a video diary. Emphasize that explaining the Maths concept is key and actions and drama can be included. Model planning, adding class ideas and allocate how many calories each astronaut in a group has per day and how many for the whole group (TC65M.11.1 to support). (PP65M.12.1-Slides 18-20, Slides 40-42, Slides 50-52)
Re-cap the steps to success and activities for the groups, discussing how to work as a group and what is expected. Explain that they can use card for perimeter/area examples, cubes for capacity and nets to create and describe shapes. They can display calculations using whiteboards and large pieces of paper. Explain that if they have planned their diaries, they should practise and create props. (PP65M.12.1-Slides 53-55)
Groups (25 mins)
Mixed Ability Groups
Work as a group to plan and act out a video diary stranded on Mars explaining mathematical concepts to help us survive (PC65M.11.1, PC65M.4.1, PP65M.12.1-Slides 10-17, Slides 21-39, Slides 43-49, card, cubes, nets, large pieces of paper and whiteboards).
Ext – Practise and create props
Plenary (5 mins)
Evaluate video diaries in progress ticking off steps to success (PP65M.12.1-Slide 56).
