Lesson Objective
To explain our maths learning
Steps to Success
1. Explain the Maths and Steps to Success
2. Every group member takes part in explaining the Maths in each question
3. Include drama and props
4. Plan
5. Work as a group
Notes
Starter (10 mins)

  • Check self assessment (PP65M.11.1-Slide 2)
Introduce problems and discuss strategies (PP65M.11.1-Slide 3).

Talk Time (Pairs organised by ability)
Partners work together to solve problems. If finished, learn times table. LA concentrate on number bonds, times tables, targets or work with support in a pair or support from teacher.

Go through workings and answers.
Main (20 mins)
Review the ‘What do we know about?’ slide that was seen at the start of the unit (PP65M.11.1-Slide 4). Look at questions in the unit (PP65M.11.1-Slides 5-6) explaining that for the next three lessons they are going to work in groups. They will practise for two lessons and then use video and assess groups in the third lesson.

Watch Scene 10 (PP65M.11.1-Slide 7) and explain that they will have to create a video diary as if they were the astronauts stranded in Mars. They will have to explain the situation and also explain the maths that we used for each question being clear in the steps to success needed in each case. They should include any pictures and actions if suitable. Every learner will need to take part in explaining the Maths used in each question. The video diaries will be assessed in these areas. Put learners in mixed ability groups (4-5 groups to shorten final performance times). (PP65M.11.1-Slides 8-9)

Look at the plan for a video diary ‘Stranded on Mars’ and discuss what is being asked in the first three questions. (PP65M.11.1-Slides 10-11)

Review prior learning looking at the calculations and steps to success for each question explaining that they will have these slides to support them in their groups. They should also use large pieces of paper and whiteboards to explain. (PP65M.11.1-Slides 12-18, Slides 22-29, Slides 33-39).

Talk Time (Mixed Ability Groups)
After each question, groups discuss how they would integrate our learning into a video diary. Emphasize that explaining the Maths concept is key and actions and drama can be included. Model planning, adding class ideas and inventing how many calories astronauts eat per day and how many days until rescue (TC65M.11.1 to support). (PP65M.11.1-Slides 19-21, Slides 30-32, Slides 40-42)

Re-cap the steps to success and activities for the groups, discussing how to work as a group and what is expected. Explain that they can cut out and use number lines from the given slides but will need to create their own tables. They can display calculations using whiteboards and large pieces of paper. Explain that if they have planned their diaries, they should practise and create props. (PP65M.11.1-Slides 43-45)
Groups (25 mins)
Mixed Ability Groups
Work as a group to plan and act out a video diary stranded on Mars explaining mathematical concepts to help us survive (PC65M.11.1, PC65M.4.1, PP65M.11.1-Slides 12-18, Slides 22-29, Slides 33-39, number lines, large pieces of paper and whiteboards).
Ext – Practise and create props
Plenary (5 mins)
Evaluate video diaries in progress ticking off steps to success (PP65M.11.1-Slide 46).

  • Self assessment (PP65M.11.1-Slide 47)

Feedback Group
 LA
  • Consolidate describing shapes using shapes from last lesson
Assessment Group
 LA
  • Support in integrating into groups and presenting mathematical concepts
Marking Group
LA
  • Assess group work and presentation
